Behind the Scenes

During the episode Cristi and daughter Adelyn visit Growing Spaces and explore the Growing Domes at our manufacturing facility in Pagosa Springs, CO. Lead gardener, Desiree, and social media coordinator, Shelby, introduced the family to the world of year-round gardening. We chatted a bit about the features that make the Growing Domes function in the harsh Rocky Mountain environment, and while that information helped them better understand the Domes. While that did not make the final cut, the Doziers and HGTV crew were amazed by all of the plants that we were growing in the middle of the winter. At the time of filming, it was late December, and we still had tomatoes!

Cristi of Building Roots was skeptical, but she was willing to try an edible nasturtium flower

Cristi and Adelyn admired all of the plants and got inspired on what to plant in the Grow Dome on the show. Ultimately, they decided to nurture some of the existing plants in the greenhouse, such as the original owner’s bougainvillea, and add some colorful edible plants. Rainbow chard and peppery nasturtiums were a hit! We even had them sample some of the flowers for themselves. To us who work here, popping off a few flowers and munching as we check on the Domes is second nature, but to our new friends, the idea of eating flowers was foreign. Cristi thought it would be a good ‘party trick’ for the dome owners.

Origin Story of the ‘Dome Sweet Dome’ House

This Grow Dome is very unique. This was an early project that was completed by Growing Spaces in 1998. Anne loved the Grow Dome and made it the main entryway into her home. The design was a bit quirky as you will see in the show. Not only was this a beautiful entryway, but it also housed the home’s only shower and a hot tub. I mean who wouldn’t want to bathe in their own little paradise? The Building Roots team had to use their creativity to reimagine the home’s design and breathe new life into the home and the greenhouse. We think they did a fabulous job!

We love sharing the joy of gardening with everyone we meet as well as working to bring every Dome owner’s dreams to life. The Doziers and their film crew are no exception. If you would like to come and see these magnificent Growing Domes for yourself, use the form below to schedule a tour!
