How does a Growing Dome Greenhouse Withstand Hail?

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Annual Severe Weather Report Summary 2022, there have been over 3,824 reports of hail in the U.S so far this year (Jan 1 – Jul 31), with 47/ 50 states reporting hail storms. We can’t speak for our friends up in Canada, but if your greenhouse is in the U.S., there’s a good chance you’ll have to deal with hail at some point.

So, how can you keep your precious plants safe from hail damage when a rainstorm takes a turn for the worse? Well, if you have a Growing Dome, you are in luck. Unlike other greenhouses or hoop houses that have covering made from glass, fiberglass, or plastic sheeting, our greenhouses are built with high-quality, hail-resistant polycarbonate glazing.

Hail Resistant Polycarbonate Glazing

Polycarbonate is by far the best greenhouse covering for extreme weather conditions. According to A&C Plastics, product details on multiwall polycarbonate, “Multiwall co-extruded thermoglazing has a high impact resistance – 200 times greater than glass and 10 times greater than acrylic. A Multiwall, 16mm panel, is so strong it can withstand the impact of a 16 lb. weight, falling 25 feet onto the panel, with no breakage. It will maintain its impact strength over a wide temperature range from -40° F to 250° F.”

We offer the polycarbonate glazing for our geodome greenhouse kits in two different thicknesses 5-wall glazing (16mm thick) and twin-wall glazing (8mm thick). Please review our polycarbonate greenhouse page to determine which is right for you.

Customer Satisfaction Guaranteed

Take it from double Dome owner Claudia Stover who lives at almost 8,000 feet in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, where the weather is often unpredictable and destructive.

“I never worry about hail or violent storm activity on my domes. They are actually a great spot to tuck into during a quick-rising storm. Love these domes.”

But what if you do get hail damage on your Growing Dome? There are accounts of Growing Domes surviving baseball-sized hail and hurricane-force winds. Still, on the off chance that you do experience damage to your polycarbonate panels, they are covered under a 10-year pro-rated manufacture warranty!

I studied marketing at Eastern Illinois University and have been working as the Marketing Director at Growing Spaces since May 2019. What I love most about my job is getting to tell the stories of our customers in our featured dome articles. It’s all about connecting through storytelling, and it’s pretty cool to see all the different ways people use our greenhouses.
