Choosing a Growing Dome for your part of Canada
Around Vancouver and Victoria, winter rain is more common than snow, making drainage and wet-weather access useful parts of greenhouse planning. Southern Ontario and Quebec can have hot, humid summers as well as cold winters, so summer ventilation belongs in the conversation alongside heating.
Across the Prairies and farther north, the months you want to garden and the crops you hope to grow shape the equipment and energy needs. Extending the outdoor season calls for a different setup than protecting tender plants through winter. Northern projects also contend with a large seasonal change in daylight.
Ron Cole's Ontario garden began with plants he could not usually grow outdoors. Green Iglu's northern projects began with a community food need. Those purposes lead to different choices about space, equipment, and who will care for the greenhouse.
Tell Arctic Acres what you hope to grow, when you want to use the greenhouse, and whether it will serve a household, school, or community. The team can compare models and prepare a Canadian project quote while local professionals confirm site and permit requirements.

A small Ontario greenhouse with room to experiment
Ron Cole built his 15-foot Growing Dome in Ontario in 2014 because he wanted to try plants he could not normally grow outdoors. He made curved raised beds and added an extra pond, using the small greenhouse in ways that suited his garden.
Our 2020 story follows his experiments with vegetables, fruit, and flowers. A peach tree became a favorite, with Ron hand-pollinating the blossoms using a paintbrush. Later plantings included grapes, a fig tree, hydrangeas, and gerbera daisies. He used a small heater to keep the greenhouse warm enough for flowers through winter.

Growing Domes and food access in northern communities
Green Iglu, formerly Growing North, began a pilot in Naujaat, Nunavut, in 2015 with two 42-foot Growing Domes. Growing Spaces helped build them, and the local community took over the project in 2018.
Our 2022 story follows further greenhouse projects in remote and Indigenous communities. Training and community participation were part of the approach alongside the structures, with the goal of producing more fresh food locally.
