The standard design combines a geodesic frame and 16 mm five-wall polycarbonate with north-side reflective insulation, an above-ground pond, ventilation, shade cloth, and undersoil air circulation.

Choose your Growing Dome size first

Choose the dome size early. It sets the usable layout, site footprint, foundation scope, installation plan, air volume, and the scale of any heating or cooling equipment.

Picture the pond and main paths first. Beds, work surfaces, seating, crop height, storage, and equipment share the remaining floor area.

Then account for the people using it. A household garden, volunteer program, or class needs a different balance of growing space and circulation. A larger dome gives you more layout flexibility, while also changing the site work and climate-support plan.

Start with the crops and winter growing goal

“Year-round” can mean harvesting spinach in January, keeping a citrus tree alive, or asking tomatoes to set fruit through the shortest days. Set that target before comparing climate options or equipment.

For season extension or hardy winter harvests, decide how long you want the growing season to run and whether crops should keep growing through the darkest weeks.

Tender plants and warm-season crops need a clearer temperature and light target. Decide whether you are protecting survival, dormancy, or continued production, and plan backup heat or power when a missed minimum would cause serious loss.

For a school or community greenhouse, add the operating calendar, supervision, utilities, work areas, and the person responsible when the site is closed.

Are Growing Domes Four-Season or Year-Round Greenhouse Kits?

Yes. Growing Dome kits are designed to support use across all four seasons, with the configuration built around the project. People often use “four-season greenhouse kit,” “year-round greenhouse kit,” and “all-season greenhouse kit” for the same broad goal: keeping a greenhouse useful beyond the standard outdoor season. Each project still needs its own temperature goal, crop plan, and equipment choices.

Match a winter greenhouse kit to your climate and site

For a cold-climate greenhouse kit, hardiness zone alone is not enough. The same outdoor low creates a different project on a sunny, sheltered site than on a shaded or exposed one.

Check the December shade pattern and winter day length. Record winter lows, elevation, wind exposure, and snow requirements, then name the indoor minimum you are trying to protect. Frost protection is a different goal from a warm greenhouse for fruiting crops.

Drainage, grade, delivery access, water, power, and fuel can also limit the workable configuration.

How we use Growing Dome systems across all four seasons

At our Pagosa Springs demonstration campus, we grow year-round with minimal supplemental heat and no supplemental lighting by choosing crops for the season. Once nighttime freezes begin, we winterize the domes by disabling the fans and vents. We leave them disabled until daytime temperatures begin to rise again.

The geodesic frame uses interconnected triangles to distribute loads. Its rounded exterior helps wind move around the greenhouse, while sloping panels help shed snow. 16 mm, five-wall polycarbonate encloses the growing space and diffuses incoming light.

Reflective north-wall insulation covers about one-third of the interior. The above-ground pond absorbs warmth during sunny periods and releases some stored heat as conditions cool, helping moderate temperature swings.

Heat-activated vent openers support passive air exchange as conditions warm. The standard undersoil system moves air from the pond area through owner-supplied 4-inch pipe routed beneath the perimeter-bed area.

How Three Owners Planned Their Growing Domes

These projects began with different priorities: tropical fruit through a Colorado winter, a 26-foot Dome with a basement and wood heat in northern Michigan, and a 22-foot household greenhouse in rural Nebraska.

When a year-round greenhouse needs heat, light, or cooling

Start with the crop and the lowest indoor temperature you need to protect. Supplemental heat may be needed when that target exceeds what the passive systems can support at the site.

Heating and lighting solve different problems. Size heat around the outdoor design condition, greenhouse size, crop sensitivity, fuel or power, and outage plan. Evaluate winter day length, cloud cover, crop type, and production goal separately when considering grow lights.

A four-season plan also has to manage the hottest weeks. Your climate may call for more ventilation, powered air movement, shading, or cooling. Place temperature and humidity sensors where they can guide seasonal adjustments and alerts.

Include fuel or electricity, routine checks, maintenance, seasonal changes, and backup procedures in the operating budget.

Plan the site and foundation for winter conditions

The frame, anchors, and foundation have to work together at the actual site. Choose the foundation from the site conditions and project requirements, and address local requirements before delivery.

Review winter sun, drainage, grade, soil and frost conditions, setbacks, utilities, and access for delivery and construction. Use current, size-specific wind and snow information; the authority having jurisdiction and the project documents control the final design requirements.

A permit, engineered plan, slope, soil condition, or local load can require a different foundation or constrain the configuration. Decide whether the build will be DIY, locally contracted, assisted, or completed by a Growing Spaces crew, then confirm current availability and scope.
