Michelle Obama and Growing Spaces – Working Toward a Common Goal
Today’s announcement that Michelle Obama is authoring a book on the importance of school, urban and community gardening is another example of the mind shift that is happening in the United States and across the globe. Her support of healthier, more self-sustaining lifestyles is directly in line with Growing Spaces vision. Growing Spaces was founded on this understanding and literally builds upon it everyday. Sixty-two different educational institutions and twenty-seven communities and organizations have purchased a Growing Dome® Greenhouse from Growing Spaces, fulfilling their vision of a healthier way of living. In 2008, the Navajo Nation chose our Growing Dome® for an innovative and holistic project initiated by Jaime Oliver, the iconic British chief and author. The Growing Dome® and organic farm program at Teec Nos Pos, Arizona is intended to provide a healthy, traditional Navajo diet to a generation of youth at risk of developing obesity and or diabetes.
Growing Spaces Growing Dome® Greenhouses provide year-round access to fresh organic produce while allowing families and communities to gain greater independence and more self-reliance. The mission does not end there for Growing Spaces. It is more than a product, it is a lifestyle of living responsibly, educating children, adults, communities and organizations on green practices, organic farming techniques, shifting awareness/embracing change, sustainable lifestyles and modeling a new business culture. There is perhaps no stronger way to re-connect with nature and the miracle of life than working with plants and the soil. When children experience the joy of planting and harvesting produce from the garden they helped grow, they are more apt to eat those vegetables. Often if left to their own devices, children choose the Growing Dome® greenhouse because they wish to model sustainability.
We applaud Michelle Obama for her efforts in promoting the awareness that all Americans can live a long healthy life by growing their own produce and living responsibly.
