Permit requirements vary by town and county. Size thresholds, use classifications, and snow load requirements differ across the state, so call your code enforcement office early and tell them the footprint and that the structure is a greenhouse. The glazed dome takes in light from every direction through short winter days, the above-ground water tank stores daytime heat and releases it overnight, automated vents open on heat rather than grid power, and the undersoil air system carries warm air into the soil, where cold nights do the most damage.

200 kids a day in a 42 foot dome

The Mary Nash Beaupre Greenhouse, a 42 foot dome run by the Boys and Girls Clubs and YMCA of Greater Waterville at the Alfond Youth Center, is wheelchair accessible, runs aquaponics and hydroponics, and supplies the Kids' Kitchen and Weekend Backpack programs year-round. About 200 kids a day use it.

A geometry project became the school greenhouse

Jay Middle School's dome started as a geometry project: two eighth graders modeled a geodesic dome in toothpicks and gummy bears, won a 4,000 dollar service learning grant, and about 100 volunteers assembled the kit in a Saturday. It grows vegetables for the cafeteria.
