Idaho winters are long and cold, and the wind finds open ground. On the high desert the same day can swing between afternoon and dawn, and frost-free windows in the mountains are short. Owners in Idaho Falls describe high winds and heavy snow loads as the baseline for their site.
The Growing Dome design answers each of these directly. The geodesic frame sheds snow instead of holding it and spreads the remaining load across the whole structure. Dome greenhouses of this class are commonly rated for 30 to 75 pounds per square foot of snow, and the Growing Dome kit can be built to withstand 120 psf and more with slight modifications. And all Growing Domes are rated for 115mph winds. The above-ground water tank stores daytime heat and releases it overnight, which narrows the swing inside. Automated vents open on heat rather than grid power, so the dome protects itself on bright winter days. The undersoil air system carries warm air into the soil, where cold nights do the most damage.
