Built for Colorado conditions
Colorado is a hard place for a greenhouse. Wet spring snow loads a structure fast. Wind is a given on open ground. High-altitude sun is strong enough to overheat a poorly vented building by mid-morning, and the same site can swing between afternoon and dawn. Frost-free windows at elevation are short.
The Growing Dome design answers each of these directly. The geodesic frame sheds snow instead of holding it and spreads the remaining load across the whole structure. Dome greenhouses of this class are commonly rated for 30 to 75 pounds per square foot of snow, and the Growing Dome kit can be built to withstand 120 psf and more with slight modifications. The above-ground water tank stores daytime heat and releases it overnight, which narrows the swing inside. Automated vents open on heat rather than grid power, so the dome protects itself on bright winter days. The undersoil air system carries warm air into the soil, where cold nights do the most damage.

Commercial growing at 10,000 feet
Cloud City Farm in Leadville sits at 10,000 feet with 28 frost-free days a year, and the nonprofit behind it grows year-round anyway. The farm grew out of a school composting program run by Cloud City Conservation Center, on land reclaimed from a Superfund site.

Taspen's Cosmic Kitchen serves a menu that is more than 95 percent organic, and after two years of buying local produce the owners put a 42 foot Growing Dome, the largest size we make, on their gardener's property to grow their own. Harvests go from the dome to the kitchen daily.

At Hillside Gardens in Colorado Springs, a 33 foot Growing Dome works as the garden center's indoor plant market by day and becomes Cactus Jack's, a greenhouse tequila bar, for weddings, private events, and a summer concert series by night.
