Greenhouses for Sale in California

Growing Spaces has built the Growing Dome® greenhouse kit in Pagosa Springs, Colorado for more than 35 years, and more than 70 of them are installed across California. The state is several climates in one: Sierra snow country, coastal fog and storm, and hot, dry inland summers.

Owners run domes in Tahoe snow and in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and for Lake Tahoe sites we have engineered custom domes for snow loads above 180 pounds per square foot.

Designed for every climate

One structure across Sierra snow, coastal fog, and inland heat, with custom builds rated for Tahoe snow loads.

Built for California conditions

A California greenhouse question depends on the address. Sierra and Tahoe sites carry serious snow. The coast trades snow for wet winters, wind, and marine fog. Inland, the problem is summer heat.

The Growing Dome design covers the spread. The geodesic frame sheds snow and spreads the remaining load across the whole structure; the kit can be built to withstand loads of 120 pounds per square foot and more with slight modifications, and for Lake Tahoe sites we have engineered custom domes rated above 180. Automated vents open on heat rather than grid power, so the dome sheds excess heat on hot days and protects itself in fog or storm. The above-ground water tank stores daytime heat and releases it overnight, and the undersoil air system carries warm air into the soil, where cold nights do the most damage.

The design pages cover each system in depth: passive solar design, thermal mass, the undersoil system, and automated vents. For structural detail, see the weather resistant greenhouse kit page.

A modern homestead in the Santa Cruz Mountains

In the Santa Cruz Mountains, Angela and Frederik Pferdt, a former Google innovation chief, built a two acre modern homestead with an 18 foot Growing Dome at its working center, started in 2020 when feeding a family of five became the point.

Choosing your dome

Growing Domes come in six sizes, 15 to 42 feet across. The right one depends on what you want to grow, how much of the year you want to grow it, and your site. The greenhouse guide walks through the choice, the shop lists current kit pricing, and the comparison pages set the dome against other structures, starting with the gothic arch.
