On Pricing, Durability, and What We're Actually Selling

Most of what I know about money, I learned the hard way. I did not grow up with a particularly clear model for how price, value, and long-term cost fit together. I made enough mistakes in early adulthood that I eventually went into finance and planning partly because I needed to understand those questions for myself.

One of the ideas I kept coming back to was cost per wear. Good leather shoes, resoled a few times, often cost less over ten years than a string of cheaper pairs, and the same reasoning applies to a solid hand tool that lasts for decades. The initial price only tells you part of what you will spend.

I bring that same thinking to a question we hear often: why does a Growing Dome cost what it costs?

The cost-per-year

A 26-foot Growing Dome is our most popular size, with roughly 530 square feet of floor area. When I wrote this in April 2026, the base kit was around $27,000, with commonly chosen options bringing it to roughly $28,000 to $30,000.

Foundation work, site prep, raised beds, and hired assembly can bring a 26-foot project to around $40,000, depending on the site and scope. To make the comparison manageable, though, I am looking here at the kit and an allowance for maintenance. Construction and operating costs need their own budget for any greenhouse.

Starting with $28,500 for a 26-foot kit with options, I also want to allow for the work it takes to keep one in service. We still help customers who bought their domes decades ago, and that kind of longevity involves periodic wood treatment, seam tape repair, hardware replacement, and eventually some glazing replacement. For this example, I have allowed 1 percent of the initial kit cost per year, or $8,550 over 30 years.

That brings the kit and assumed maintenance to about $37,000 over 30 years, which works out to roughly $2.33 per square foot per year across 530 square feet. I am using the initial prices throughout, without adjusting future costs for inflation.

For comparison, take a 120-square-foot greenhouse priced at $3,000, or $25 per square foot. The lower initial outlay is substantial, and it may be the right choice for someone with modest growing plans.

If that greenhouse lasts five years before replacement, keeping the same space available for 30 years would require six purchases: the original and five replacements. At an unchanged $3,000 each, the total would be $18,000, or $5.00 per square foot per year. Of course, the five-year life is an assumption in this example, so the comparison changes with the structure, maintenance, and conditions it faces.

Even with those assumptions laid out, I would want to understand the heating costs and repair support before buying. How much supplemental heat will the intended crops need, and will replacement panels still be available if the product line is discontinued? Those questions are part of understanding what a greenhouse will cost over the years I expect to rely on it.

What the math misses

That leads to the limits of a cost-per-square-foot calculation. It can help compare the initial investment over time, but it cannot tell you how many months a greenhouse will be useful, how much heat it will need, or how well it will hold up in bad weather.

For winter growing, insulation reduces heat loss while real thermal mass stores some daytime warmth for later. Both affect the amount of supplemental heat needed, so their value becomes clearer once you know the climate and what the owner wants to grow.

Repairability belongs in that calculation too. The dome is modular by design, with individual struts, glazing panels, and hubs that can be replaced when they are damaged or worn. The work involved depends on the affected part and the condition of the surrounding structure.

Because we expect owners to maintain these greenhouses, we also need to make the parts and guidance available for them to do it. Designing a replaceable component is only part of that responsibility.

What else you're paying for

That responsibility continues well beyond the sale. We still answer the phone for customers who bought their greenhouses years ago, and maintaining that support is part of the cost of making a product people expect to keep.

Those conversations also help us improve the product information. Customer questions and field experience inform our installation manuals, maintenance guidance, and climate-specific resources, so we continue to learn from the people using the structures.

Owners have useful knowledge to share with each other as well. We built the Growing Dome Enthusiasts Facebook group because they wanted a place to exchange advice, troubleshoot problems, and show what they were growing. It gives new owners a chance to learn from people who have already worked through a similar problem.

Manufacturing in southwestern Colorado brings another set of choices into the price. At the time of writing, no one on our production floor earns less than $22.50 an hour after their probation period, benchmarked against the Region 9 Economic Development wage report for our area. We could likely lower costs by making different choices about labor and production, but I want the people building these structures to be able to live where they work. They also use the product in the same mountain climate we design for.

The honest alternative

For all of those reasons, a Dome is a substantial purchase, and our advisors sometimes recommend a different type of greenhouse when helping someone decide.

If what you want is a relatively simple structure to stretch the season a bit on either side of summer, there are lower-cost greenhouses that may do exactly what you need. For plenty of people, that is a sensible choice.

We tend to fit people who expect to use their greenhouse for a long time, want to grow through winter, or need a structure suited to a demanding site. When that is the plan, the ability to repair the structure and get help years later becomes a larger part of its value.

What we are actually selling

Growing Spaces has been building Domes for more than 35 years, but since buying the company in April 2025, I have had to make the spending decisions that allow that work to continue.

Durable materials, repairable construction, customer support, and domestic labor all cost money. If we want to keep providing them, we have to account for them in the price.

At the same time, I want us to be useful to people with smaller gardens and budgets. That is why we are also working on smaller, lower-priced products such as cold frames, raised beds, and potting benches, with the same attention to construction and repair.
