Grow Your Own Food All Winter Long
Food matters. Imagine having access to healthy, homegrown, nutrient dense food and the convenience of it being in your own backyard... any time of year. Over 25 years ago, the founders of Growing Spaces pioneered a new way growing your own food. Fed up with industrial agriculture and the ineficiencies of traditional greenhouses, they created a net-zero, state of the art, geodesic greenhouse. The Growing Dome creates an indoor garden sanctuary that grows all winter long... even in the Rocky Mountains.

Winter Gardening Safe Haven
The last day of February, we were hit with a foot of wet snow. The next day, the wind was howling. We thought winter had released its grip, but not yet. We braved the whipping snow and wind to shoot a little video of the inside of our 33'Growing Dome. When the weather is chaotic and unpredictable, the Growing Dome continues to be a peaceful sanctuary full of living, growing greenery. Step inside to our winter garden safe haven.
Winter Gardening in the 15′ Growing Dome®
Episode 1: Introduction to the 15' Growing Dome® Project
Our product specialists, Jeremy and Dana, introduce the new 15' Growing Dome® project. Starting from scratch, sowing seeds on the 1st of October. Follow along to see our progress throughout the Colorado winter, the challenges we face, and how we overcome them.
Unique Features of the Growing Dome
Benefits of the Growing Dome®
Learn, from the founder, how the geodesic shape of our Growing Dome® greenhouse withstands the weather. We tell you exactly how much wind and how much snow it will handle and explain just how energy efficient these greenhouses are compared to others. Year-round gardening and sanctuary space are also covered in this comprehensive 10 minute video.
Geothermal Greenhouse: In the central air system (also known as the "undersoil heating & cooling system"), a solar panel on the Growing Dome® greenhouse produces electricity to power a fan which blows the air inside the greenhouse through pipes buried in the perimeter raised soil beds. The air at the intake is warm in the winter and cool in the summer, so you are effectively heating or cooling your soil depending on the time of year. This Growing Spaces system also helps circulate air through the solar Growing Dome to even out the overall temperature. One-of-a-kind in greenhouse designs, this feature makes year round growing a reality.
Automatic Greenhouse Vents and the Chimney Effect
Growing Dome® greenhouse automatic vent openers are heat activated and require no electricity to operate. Growing Spaces greenhouse designs include upper and lower vents that open and close at an adjustable preset temperature due to the expansion and contraction of beeswax in a piston. Cooling of these geodesic greenhouses is achieved as hot air escapes from the top vents and cold air is drawn in through the lower vents. This creates a "chimney" effect and prevents overheating of our year round greenhouses. The window vents open and close automatically, freeing you to go on vacation without worry about your garden.
The Growing Dome® Passive Solar Design
The curved surface of the Growing Dome® allows for a very even heat input by the sun throughout the day. A rectangular greenhouse has a large flat area sloping south allowing a large amount of heat to come in at mid-day. Furthermore, in the early morning and late afternoon, the heat input is negligible, when it is needed most. The Growing Dome 'tracks' the sun all day long in the winter and captures the early morning and afternoon sun in the summer.
Winter in the Growing Dome® Greenhouse
Even with below zero (°F) night time temperatures, we're still gardening in our Growing Dome®. Udgar Parsons, Growing Spaces co-owner, takes us on a tour of both our 22' and 33' Growing Domes. He points out plants sown in earlier videos from this year and shows what happens in our gardens in December.
