Growing Domes Thrive as Therapy Greenhouses

As the owner of Growing Spaces, I have the privilege of collaborating with various organizations, including schools, non-profits, and community groups, to promote sustainable and innovative growing and healing practices. Through our in-kind grants and partnerships, we aim to empower individuals and organizations to cultivate their own food, regardless of their climate, location or resources.

In addition to food production, our Growing Domes serve as therapeutic greenhouses, offering a serene and calming environment for individuals within the community. These spaces provide a unique opportunity for relaxation, connection with nature, and personal well-being.

Valor Point VA Domiciliary

A Growing Spaces grant winner from 2022, I visited Valor Point Domiciliary for Homeless Veterans in August 2024 to see how the 26′ Growing Dome Greenhouse was being utilized for the veterans. I met Alicia and John who were in charge of maintaining the greenhouse. They were growing dahlias, peppers, tomatoes, and a lemon tree and providing fresh produce for the kitchen. Jessica told me they had to purchase bigger salad bowls to accommodate the amount of veggies that were being provided for the veterans.

Many of the veterans would also use the space for therapy and meditation and to find a peaceful place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the VA. They would go early in the morning or late at night and light incense to get some peace. It was a very natural space for them and helped to reduce anxiety. They would feed the fish, water the plants, and enjoy the ambiance of the dome.

Greg, a former marine, said it helped him see things differently and gave him a unique point of view in his therapy and recovery process. For Justin, it was his first interaction with the staff at the VA, and Alicia in particular helped him become part of the community there. Justin called it a ‘nursery for life.’

John and Alicia have also spent a lot of time on the outdoor growing beds which also provide food for the kitchen. They are starting to plant the perimeter beds in the dome. Soon they’ll be able to generate enough food to support the local food bank.

Eliada Home

Our hearts go out to those affected by the hurricanes in the Southeast. We reached out to a few customers in the Asheville, North Carolina, area. Fortunately, they were safe, and their Growing Doimes were unharmed by the hurricanes and floods.

“Whew… our dome survived tropical storm Helene mostly unscathed. During the height of the storm I was watching out the window and saw the wind gusts (they topped out at about 70 mph) open the top vents. The ropes kept them from being ripped off. No power and unlikely to have it for days. But I’m grateful our house isn’t under water or that our vehicles aren’t crushed — so many people are far worse off than us. “

The Eliada Homes Campus FARM Program in Asheville is a therapeutic animal and horticulture program designed to help youth develop life skills, responsibility, and a strong work ethic. Participants engage in hands-on experiences such as caring for animals, gardening, and other farm-related activities, fostering personal growth and emotional healing for children and teens facing various challenges. The FARM Program not only provides therapeutic benefits but also contributes to the community by supplying fresh produce to their central kitchen, local markets, and community food banks. The FARM includes a 42′ Growing Dome Greenhouse.

“We’re relieved to report that our dome structure itself sustained no damage. Unfortunately, we did lose nearly all of the plants inside due to the extended loss of power and water, but the good news is that they can be replanted. In addition to that, we did experience some damage to the school, other greenhouses and garden areas.”

Greenhouse Therapy

Having a greenhouse and gardening offers profound therapeutic benefits, nurturing both body and mind. The physical activity involved promotes fitness and helps reduce stress, while the presence of plants and natural light fosters a calming environment. Gardening can enhance mood, increase mindfulness, and provide a sense of accomplishment as you nurture life from seed to bloom. It’s an immersive escape that cultivates both greenery and peace of mind.

All of us at Growing Spaces are deeply grateful for the opportunity to support these Growing Dome champions, who are bringing fresh produce and vital assistance to their communities.
